Meeting
Manners Matter
Good
manners matter.
Just
think of a time when you have felt awkward or out of place--
even for a short time. Most of us appreciate the courtesies that
make us feel included, desirable, and valuable. One key courtesy
is to use people’s names.
Here
are a handful of tips to help you do just that:
-
Ask for a list of participants’ names in advance. Familiarize
yourself with the names prior to your meeting; you will find
it easier to remember names once you meet people face to face.
-
If
a name is misspelled on a badge or place card, fix
it…immediately.
-
Have blank badges and place cards ready and waiting for needed
corrections and for additional participant names.
-
If
you print place cards or tent cards, print the names on the
front AND the back so that people can see who’s who no matter
where they are sitting.
-
Take the time to use participant names throughout the meeting.
Everyone loves hearing his/her own name…pronounced correctly,
of course!
No
matter the situation, no matter the people involved, no matter
the subject, good manners matter.
"As I grow older, I pay less attention
to what people say.
I just watch what they do."
