Fourteen companies under the umbrella of a
parent company needed clearer processes for identifying and
sharing information about valuable business practices. Sharply
competitive with one another and highly competent, senior leadership
benefited from essential skills of communication to enjoy greater
value from each other's expertise and experience. Through our design
and facilitation of a retreat, we positioned the presidents of these
companies to listen more carefully and to take action to benefit the
whole rather than just their own interests. They also became more
aware of the profitable benefits of shared knowledge and resources.

A work group responsible for testing
equipment for the navy was in sharp decline in terms of morale
and trust. In fact, on a survey assessing team trust, the collective
score was an 8.14 out of a possible 20. In just two days, all six
participants made significant improvements in their abilities to
confront one another on key issues affecting relationships and
goals. Issues of lying, threatening, whining, and temper tantrums
were addressed with specific and personal commitments for
improvement and/or resolution. One participant expressed, "I'm in
shock. Never would I have guessed that this group of people could
come so far in just two days." Internal brilliance unleashed.
Unprepared participants. Meetings that drag on
and are boring. Meetings that lack direction. These are just three
significant complaints that led a renowned private college to
hire us to provide "Gourmet Meetings on a Microwave Schedule" to
their staff. Providing 12-20 potential solutions for each of their
expressed problems gave staff the opportunity to select those that
would be most helpful to their campus given their culture and their
willingness to follow through. Four weeks later, feedback indicates
that the ideas are being implemented and that more effective and
productive meetings are being conducted. Internal brilliance

An executive asked for coaching in areas
of goal setting, personal presence, and avoiding self sabotage. A
rape survivor with multiple emotional issues, years of counseling
had helped but not resolved her challenges related to healthy self
esteem, sustained performance, and healthy relationships with both
sexes. Within six months, this client reports specific and large
gains in behavioral changes that have enhanced career performance,
personal relationships and the courage to take greater initiative on

The national field sales force for a
financial institution was challenged to raise sales for the
coming fiscal year. Using a rational process, the diverse group of
25 salespeople used brainstorming, prioritizing and action planning
to meet their new goals despite a lack of leadership and a
tumultuous relationship with their corporate office. The following
January, a corporate representative called. Her first words were,
"Sales is now the Cinderella of the company. The sales people have
been overachievers on merchant and credit card goals. They’re at
128% of what was asked of them. Credit card production was up 30,000
cards over the previous year - with the same number of people and
resources." She went on to say, "I have even more great statistics
that I could tell you...But what I also want you to know is that the
corporate office paid attention to their list of concerns and
responded. The sales force now knows it has a voice. Treatment of
people in sales is different now - in ways that are important to
them." A near uprising was redirected into focused, breakthrough
results to benefit the company and it’s employees. Internal

The smelter operation of an aluminum plant
was in trouble with its safety outcomes. Susan Wilson was asked
to work with a 16-man union-management team to reduce the serious
injury rate by 50% per 200,000 man-hours worked in a 12 month
period. As she was opening the meeting, one of the men looked Susan
straight in the eye and said, "This meeting is &@*! and you can go
to *!#/". Taking quick action to neutralize his comment , she
redirected the energy in the room to the essential safety issues. In
just 7 hours, the group identified specific and relevant strategies
to achieve the mandate. The pot room superintendent stated , "This
session helped us help ourselves and was the catalyst that got our
safety process moving forward again". Months later, Susan received a
call from the engineering manger saying that the objective had been
exceeded – beyond expectation. In a year's time, there were zero
serious injuries for 750,000 man-hours worked. Internal brilliance
